janet
hayes

highly awarded still life and portrait artist

ABOUT JANET:

In addition to oils, acrylics, printmaking and illustration media, her passion has been pastel for the last 35 years because of her love for a medium that is pure pigment; pure colour at her fingertips which she renders in a sensuous way creating colourful nuances of light and dark, a medium that she has mastered through her art work and championed through her involvement with art societies, art tutoring, mentoring and exhibiting.

Janet has had eleven solo exhibitions. She has exhibited in many group exhibitions around Australia and overseas including the USA, UK, China, Canada and Europe.

In the late seventies she studied art at the Melbourne College of Decoration, then studied life drawing with Con Pappas at Era School, Donvale. In the mid-eighties she studied portraiture with artist Daniel Greene in New York.

Her artworks have been published in magazines and books nationally and internationally.

In 2019 Janet won the Inaugural John Dudley Portrait Prize for her “Self portrait with hands”

Among several other awards she has received is the Allied Artists of America Award at the Pastel Society of America annual exhibition, New York City in 1993. More recently, in 2021 her “Observation and stillness self portrait” was selected as a semi-finalist portrait in the prestigious, national, Doug Moran prize.

Janet was a founding member, first Vice President and honorary member of the Pastel Society of Victoria, Australia. She is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America and an honorary member of the Societe des Pastellistes de France.
