evoking the soul and spirit of her chosen subjects

ABOUT MARY:

Mary’s works, utilising the qualities of Yupo paper, encompass and highlight three important aspects which constantly inspire: subject essence rather than detail, controlled colour blending and evoking the soul and spirit of her chosen subjects.

One of her principal influences stems from studying the 19thC Impressionists Movement where unusual visual angles are used to represent ordinary subject matter.

While preparing for her solo exhibition at the Red Door Gallery, Clunes, Mary captured each subject’s existence within its own narrative setting by using the exquisite Australian light.

As a recurring theme, she used similar approaches for exhibitions at The Australian Guild of Realist Artists and ‘Colours of Friendship’ Exhibition at Ballarat.

Her latest commissioned work for the Melbourne Scottish Fiddle Club was to design and execute the cover of their latest music CD Sea to Sky.

Other strong influences and inspiration in her earlier work come from interaction with other Victorian artists: Julie Goldspink, Linda MacAulay and Robyn Kittelty-Redman.

Whilst workshopping with the international artist Alvaro Castagnet, he conveyed to Mary the following artist’s principle ‘paintings need to evoke the very soul of the subject being painted’. This has stayed with Mary whether she is painting on Yupo paper or canvas.
