Vessels: The Margaret Lawrence Australian Ceramics Collection
& Yarra Valley Artists

In November an important selection of 25 objects will travel, on loan, to the Yarra Valley.  It is a wonderful opportunity to see historic Australian ceramics alongside

contemporary potters of the Yarra Valley: Master Potter Ted Secombe, with Alistair Whyte, Lynne McDowell and Laura Windmill.

Ted Secombe:
Ted Secombe is regarded as one of Australia’s most significant and accomplished ceramic artists, who exhibits extensively in Australia and internationally.

Ted is known for his beautiful and graceful forms, with glazes, including crystalline, that are rich in colour, and delicate in texture and patterning. He is constantly experimenting and developing his glazes, some of which are reminiscent of ancient Chinese glazes.

Alistair Whyte:
For over forty years Alistair Whyte has honed his skills as a ceramic artist. After training in the western Leach tradition, he spent some years in Japan where the oriental traditions and techniques he absorbed fundamentally changed his approach. Working with the delicacy and the rigours of porcelain have become the mainstay of his practice, but never a limiting factor.

Lynne McDowell:
Lynne McDowell began potting full-time in 1973. Based initially in Brisbane, she worked on the Boards of the Crafts Council of Queensland and the Queensland Potters' Association. She specialises in precisely controlled vessel forms in porcelain with incised black line designs inlaid with gold lustre, and also works with terracotta on sculptural garden pieces.

Laura Windmill:
Laura focuses on low fired porcelain saggar fired with combustibles. Nonfunctional decorative vessels with patterns influenced by the desert, shapes and colours of nature. The passage of flames and smoke create one off ceramic pieces.
