Creating realistic wildlife artwork with fibre to record the beauty of our threatened nature

ABOUT KATE:

Kate’s artistic attention over the past four years has been on the new world of fibre art. With a strong focus on Australian birds and wildlife, Kate’s passion for all animals has led to many commissions to create portraits and sculptures of people's beloved pets. Images are free-hand translated by eye for detail to a felt canvas using natural fibres and a barbed needle.

With her home backing onto bushland on the outskirts of Healesville, Kate’s studio is a small corner of her home office by a window half covered by bushes, where glimpses of foraging birds fuel her vision. She often enjoys the visits of native parrots and circling eagles.

Kate’s successful exhibition in Marysville’s Three Fishes Gallery proved a turning point for Kate as she now enjoys the patronage of a keen collector from the USA whose varied requests every couple of months over the last two years have included a life size cat sculpture, a 20cm sculpture of kangaroos,  a pet dog and a mother and joey koala.

Aside from creating one-off artworks and fibre painting, Kate enjoys teaching this young art-form to all age groups and loves the challenge of commissioned pet portraits and sculpture.

Kate participated in Yarra Valley Open Studios in 2021.
