Community is one of the defining features of YAVA Arts Hub & Gallery; while the Yarra Valley itself is known for its arts community, these particular artists found sustenance and support through YAVA’s weekly catch-up sessions, both in person and via Zoom. They have named themselves S.C.O.N.E.S. (Social Creative Outlet Not Only Eating Scones!), and this group exhibition is a showcase of their productivity, passion and resilience made manifest in artworks across several mediums. 

A lot of things stopped during the various restrictions of 2021. This group of artists did not: their commitment to making art, to using creativity as a balm, and sharing the fruits of these endeavours was instrumental in buoying their spirits throughout the stay-at-home periods of the year.

You will find the exhibition installed at YAVA Gallery to resemble home spaces, speaking to the sanctuary of ‘home’ that we found ourselves restricted to for many months of the year. In these spaces are assemblages, installations and artworks that express the comforts of home as experienced by these artists. Calm, beauty and nostalgia underpin the works that convey the artists’ interpretation of their experience, celebrating the objects, people and places both inside and outside of their homes.

Notions of ‘in’ and ‘out’ have become central to our daily lives in ways we wouldn’t have imagined previously. This group exhibition unites these individual artists in their intention to express appreciation for the inner and outer worlds, creativity and community, in ways that are both personal yet universally recognisable.

Learn to create a 2D Fibre painting using Needle felting techniques with textile artist Taylor Sunday the 19th of December. This beginner class, will teach you how to make a 2D fibre painting - you will have a choice of two paintings, Blue Wren Male or Two Blue Wren Females. All fibres and backing needles etc are supplied in a kit for you to take home with enough to create a second painting.
